Good idea, never thought of it! It's not the rubber that gives the tire its strength, it's the cord or belt inside the rubber. There use to be companies around that would do this on a machine that would spin the tire as it was removing the rubber.

Just FYI, that rubber dust is hard on the lungs. Always use a respirator when you do that.

I wonder how many people will try this and then have there tire fail at highway speeds because they took too much off ,or they made a slight imperfection it the plys of the sidewall, of there "cheap 10 dollar tire" was not road-worthy to begin with...best of luck on that....
