This is a classical Italian mandolin (made by Luigi Embergher, Rome). Other types of mandolins (with different shape and sound but the same tuning) were derived from this instrument.

what kind of mandolin is that? it looks and sounds a lot different from the western folk and bluegrass mandolins. is it tuned GDAE?

I am about to start the mandolin and this is very motivating to watch, that must be rediculously hard. I play the guitar and when I try the mandolin the frets are TiNY! You can really wail on it, *clap*.
