i have been to a welding school and now have been production welding for 8 years the best advice i could give anyone trying to teach someone else how to weld is to get rid of the butt joints the t-joints all that is crap never used it my self first thing i learned when i became a "real welder" was what your trying to teach will never be used in production welding. i guess though your techneque would work great on the farm

Your welding terminology sounds weird to me(Belgian)... is that universal english terminology? christmas tree? and root run? is there a webby with a list of terminology because I was schooled in dutch but work bilingual. I guess what your saying is that you first do a downward pass to get the corner and then go up to fill it? which would seem strange as here we do it in one upward pass. BTW although cane was arrogant I wouldnt be agist, there is some astonashingly good young welders out there.

Have to agree with you sika. When i did my WTIA cert you had to do a vertical root run first, followed by the xmas tree. (then break it in the press to check the peno. Not sure what point your mate 19cane is trying to get across?

the zipper technique is more commonly used on pressure welds and when highest of quality is used but great tips for the average joe

Sorry to tell you mate but what u teaching is wrong you didnt pause in the center which will give u lack of peno in the critical spot i bet if u break that weld u will find little pockets which mean incompete peno very bad.try using the 2 tequnice root run use ur christmas tree and whe caping it use ur weving from side to side puseing on the edgeshere in Aust. your tequnice for a vertical up is an instant fail

I graduated as photo MIG welder and was always thought triangular was correct. other tips you might appreciate is that if your handle is vertical your angle should be about right depending on your torch. and hold the center a bit longer and sharpen up the tip of your triangle or "V", just looking at this i'm pretty sure there's cavities in the center of that bead.(no offence, I know how long it takes to get that far).
