The M1 Carbine was developed as a replacement for the M1911 service pistol. The U.S. Military had a need to arm second line and non-combat troops with a shoulder weapon. They wanted something more accurate out to 200, and the 1911 model was not as accurate out at long distances. In no way was the M1 Carbine a replacement to the M1 Garand.

Did they designate the para version M1A1?Hmmm, I didn't know that, I just figured it was an M1 with a folding stock. That was an oversight on my part, but I am also sure he didn't know that either

Sorry FDNY, but the jackass is technically correct. The M1A1, as well as being a submachine gun is also the designation for the first M1 carbine variant (along with M1A3, M2 and M3). The M1A1 is the paratrooper folding stock version. Although I doubt Whaaatacracker knew this before he shot his big mouth off.

FDNY612 (January 15, 2008 at 6:29 pm)
please inform yourself....the M1A1 was a sub machine gun called the Thompson. The Carbine was never called "M1A1" It was however designated M1, M2(which was the full auto variant) and M3 which was fitted with 1st generation infra red sights in Korea. Check your facts before you go off on me you uneducated ass.
