The original is named 'Dos Kelbl' (the calv). The English translation is quite accurate.The song's author is Jtschak Katsenelson, a jewish writer and teacher in Poland before the war. After the German occupation he lived in the Warsaw ghetto. Under the impression of the deportations he wrote this song. He and all his family were finally deported themselves and were killed in Auschwitz.If you are interested in the jiddish version, then buy 'Zupfgeigenhansel - Jiddische Lieder'.

My mom sang this in choir one year and it has become a family lullaby. I sing this to my son every night, I just leave out the verses and sing the chorus.
