WCW Heavyweight Title is vacated after Starcade 1997


 
   

After Starcade 1997 and the 'controversial' ending to the Sting vs. Hogan match, the title is vacated on the debut of WCW Thunder. This is also the first time Sting spoke on television in over a year.

and incase anyone wants to say "well Hogan had creative control". Yes this is true he did have creative control over his contract and character. HOWEVER all final decisions had to be approved by the board of directors. And if anyone had bothered to do any research they would have found that sting maintained his conditioning throughout the lengthy time off. The time off was simply to advance his character as mysterious and abandoned. But I bet you all already knew that...NOT

Are you people that moronic? It was done to strictly advance the STORYLINE. Think about it morons. If Sting had won cleanly. Who would main event the next wcw PPV? Hogan? Another #1 contender? There was no bribing done on any end. It was to ADVANCE storyline. You all actually think backstage politics were the reason for the controversial finish? Man clearly you all haven't been watching wrestling..ever. From a business standpoint had it been a "pay off" Nick Patrick would have been termed..

Well I heard Sting had been working out, his muscles and body were pretty good, almost as much as Hogan. Plus there's no excuse for Hogan's back stage BS, Starrcade deserved a clean finish and it wasn't delivered. Hogan did so many other things that make him an asshole in my book.

Actually, it's pretty much accepted that Hogan asked (and perhaps even paid) Nick Patrick to botch the fast count so he would look stronger than Sting. And that's also why he refused to tap out. I agree about the motive, though - but it's pretty hypocritical of Hogan considering that he's since beaten people like Shawn Michaels and Randy Orton when in reality he was barely able to walk.

I bet most of you didn't know that the reason Hogan had the ending changed was mostly Sting's fault. Sting hadn't wrestled or kept himself in very good shape for almost a year. Come time for the match, Hogan felt Sting didn't deserve the clean win because he didn't prepare for the match. He was out of shape and obviously not very committed to it. Sting's punishment was winning it with a dirty finish. The botched "fast count" was Nick Patrick's fault, though he didn't catch shit for it.

Hogan's backstage politicking killed WCW. Like i said, anybody who's the most overrated wrestler for 5 years running shouldn't have the title. Hell, he shouldn't even be getting a main event push.Although i will say i miss these days

Well said Shooooooo81. I think the move made in this video was a HUGE mistake by WCW at the time, I mean that Hogan-Sting match at Starcade 97' was way too hyped up to have such a shitty finish. Damn, I miss them days, glad I worked swing shift (2p-10p) back then, because now I have boxes of VHS tapes full of Nitro and Raw footage from September 97' to like 2007. It's awesome.
