Aria:There is no true peace in the worldwithout bitterness; in you, sweet Jesus,it is pure and rightful.Amongst anguish and tormentlives the contented soul, its only hope, chaste love. The Academy of Ancient Music.Emma Kirkby (Soprano).Dir: Cristopher Hogwood.Nulla in mundo pax sincera (RV 630) is a motet composed by Antonio Vivaldi, the title of which may be translated as "In this world there is no honest peace". Written in the key of E major and in the typical lyrical Italian Baroque style, it is scored for solo soprano, two violins, viola and basso continuo, this would normally be a cello and keyboard instrument, in Vivaldi's case often the organ. The piece praises Jesus Christ for the salvation he offers (in Christianity) to an imperfect world full of evil and sin; as one of Vivaldi's sacred works, the lyrics are accordingly written in the traditional Latin.

Good for you froogle, a comment worth reading. It's all very well counting a whole bag of sweets but the joy is in popping one in your mouth. It's a strange thing about music and music programmes where people use mathematical and literary terms in profusion, instead of letting the music resound in their hearts. This piece is a Joy.Gratitude to Vivaldi and to Kirkby, beautiful.

Hey I speak Latin and to me this sounded fine.Im not sure what people are fussing about, because the true Latin accent is not known anyway especially singing in Latin, which has different pronunciation. You would assume it Latin would have resembled something like the Italian accent today. However I dont know if it would have sounded even like that! So lets just concentrate on how lovely this song is and how beautiful Emma Kirkbys voice is.

And as someone who's not Italian, but who has studied Latin, we have to remember, we aren't sure about the pronunciation anyway. Scholars can only do their best to give us the best estimate possible. I'm very glad of it though. I never think there is something wrong with the way Emma Kirkby sings.

No matter how much punk, rock or rap I listen to, Vivaldi never fails to remind me just why I listen to music.
