If you play the Death Cab for Cutie technique, instead of up and downstroking with the first finger, you can catch the needed upstroke on the upwards motion of your thumb, so you would be picking upwards with the back of the thumbnail; and you no longer rest the thumb on the bottom string, it's more like Travis picking. I use this technique in a couple of my videos. It is so fun to learn a new technique, it adds so much more to your knowledge at one time.

You want to boil the passages played down to a "technique." Like this one uses the first finger flicking downstroke with the percussive thumb click at the same time; where usually playing fingerstyle you would only choose to pick upwards with the fingers, he has nailed the technique and plays it very cleanly; but you can get away with playing the technique used in Follow You Into the Dark, where he produces the "click" by "raking" the strings with the fingernails instead of the thumb...........

agreed sto arguing how he plays this song ..each great guitar player has their own style of playing guitar your never going to be able to replicate it ..just play the guitar in your own way ..
