Keep in mind that this cartoon was made in the 1930's/40's, before the entire Civil Rights movement took effect. Blackface comedy was still part of the social norm back then. Of course, it still exists now, but it's more as a comedic sense, not racist.

There are other countries that are undergoing a decade of civil war and you can't stomach a cartoon with an 1800's black guy hunting rabbits and talking weird? Perhaps because this is a Tex Avery cartoon it concentrates more on gags and to entertain. He seemed like Elmer Fudd but black. The dice thing at the end was a little racey but it made me laugh, just like Ashy Larry makes me laugh. I think a lot of the problems has to do with the animators themselves being white. What they don't mention is that many of these animators have black friends and get them to perform in these shorts. Either with voicework or music. I thought this cartoon was great.

in 1941, Lena Horne couldn't be shown in white Southern cinemas because black women weren't supposed to be seen as beautiful. Look it up. Read Howard Zinn. White cartoon producers weren't just having a laugh. Why did they think that those stereotypes were funny? Ask yourself why *you* think they're funny. A culture and its mores can't be separated from the art it creates. People must stop being willfully ignorant so they can feel better about themselves. The bullshit shows through anyway.
