NIXON TAPES: Emotionally Contemplates Resigning (Henry Kissinger)
April 17, 1973White House TelephonePart of a conversation with President Richard Nixon and his then-National Security Advisor Henry Kissinger. This conversation took place around midnight. In it, Nixon emotionally discusses the growing Watergate scandal and the possibility of having to fire his Chief of Staff H. R. (Bob) Haldeman. He also says that he has already contemplated resigning himself in favor of his Vice President Spiro Agnew (this was more than a year and three months before he actually did resign). Earlier that night, Nixon made his first public pronouncement on Watergate, and John Dean had just begun to cooperate with investigators.
