Apparently this mother trusts John McCain and Sarah Palin to get the job done in Afghanistan and make sure that her son did not die in vain, and I agree.McCain Given Dog Tags of Soldier Who Was Killed in AfghanistanBy Hans NicholsSept. 19 (Bloomberg) -- The mother of a fallen soldier in Afghanistan handed John McCain an envelope that contained sacred contents: dog tags.``Please remember and support our troops in Afghanistan, God Bless you,'' she had scrawled on the outside.Cheryl Lee Patrick, the mother of Staff Sergeant Patrick Lee Lybert, wanted the Republican presidential nominee to understand ``that our troops in Afghanistan need to be supported,'' she said in a telephone interview yesterday from her home in Ladysmith, Wisconsin. ``I just asked him never to forget Afghanistan.''Presidential candidates get handed all sorts of items during the course of a campaign. For McCain, 72, being handed dog tags, or even a prisoner of war bracelet that bears his name from his time as a captive during the Vietnam War, isn't unusual.Patrick's 28-year-old son died two years ago, high in the Hindu Kush mountains. A Taliban bullet found a seam between his helmet and his body armor and ``got him in the head,'' she said.``They need more troops there,'' said Patrick, who plans to vote for McCain. ``We have boots on the ground there, but not enough to win the war.''McCain, landing in Green Bay Wisconsin yesterday afternoon, was greeted by Patrick on the tarmac. Just hours later, he recounted the exchange, recalling it in closing a rally with his running mate, Alaska Governor Sarah Palin, 44.Before the crowd, he pulled the envelope from his pocket and read ``to Senator John McCain my son, Staff Sergeant Patrick Lee Lybert, KIA June 21, 2006, Afghanistan.''`Sacrifice'McCain recounted how he boarded his campaign bus, opened the envelope and found the dog tags. His voice breaking, he pulled them out to show the crowd of approximately 10,000 at the Resch Center Arena.``Cheryl Lee Patrick, our hearts, our thoughts and our prayers go out to her and all the families who have made such a great sacrifice,'' McCain said. ``I know that I can make sure his sacrifice was not in vain because I will always put my country first.''Both McCain, and his opponent, Senator Barack Obama, 47, wear black bracelets given to them by mothers whose sons have died in Iraq, to honor the war dead.Obama, an Illinois Democrat, was given his bracelet in Wisconsin last February by Tracy Jopek, whose son, Ryan, was killed at age 20 by a roadside bomb in August 2006. He invokes Jopek's death to inveigh against a war he never supported, reminding voters of the war's human costs.On the TarmacMcCain closes most of his events by retelling how Lynn Savage approached him at a town hall meeting in Wolfboro, New Hampshire, in August of 2007. She handed him a black bracelet, engraved with the name of her son, Matthew Stanley, dead at 22.Patrick said she is troubled ``by the fact that the government doesn't allow pictures of the coffins coming home.''``It distances Americans from the reality that there's a war going on,'' Patrick said.On the tarmac yesterday, Patrick also shared a moment with Palin. She handed her old blue star pin -- which signifies having a family member serving in war -- to the governor, whose son just deployed to Iraq.McCain kept saying, ``I am so sorry, I am so sorry,'' Patrick said, and offered her a hug. Walking away, he turned sharply and saluted.Patrick said she has no question about who her son would support for president if he were alive. ``He had always wished that Senator McCain be president,'' she said.
