Gabrielle (Hootenanny Singers - featuring Björn)

In 1964 Björn of ABBA and his band Hootenanny Singers had a big hit with the song "Gabrielle".What I'm aware of, they recorded the song in both Swedish, German, Dutch and English and became quite big in Holland. Here's the song performed in English.(Thanks to "tomos85" for info about the Dutch version)More info can be read on ABBAonTVwww.abbaontv.com/1969% 0and%20before/description-hootenanny-singers-gabrielle.html**************************************Lyrics:GABRIELLEGabrielle, I sure love youSure as heaven's above youWhile I'm gone I'll dream of youFare thee well, Gabrielle.Gabrielle, I adore youAnd I want the world for youWait for me, I implore youFare thee well, Gabrielle. There is a lotI've got to doThere is a world out there waitingI'll bring the worldRight back to youFor you're the whole world to me.Gabrielle, I sure love youSure as heaven's above youWhile I'm gone I'll dream of youFare thee well, Gabrielle.Gabrielle, I adore youAnd I want the world for youWait for me, I implore youFare thee well, Gabrielle.I picture youDressed as a brideI hear the wedding bells ringingI picture meThere by your sideThere I will be evermore.Gabrielle, I adore youHere's the ring I bought for youMarry me, I implore youRing the bell, Gabrielle.Hear the wedding march playingNow I'm home, I'll be stayingNevermore to be sayingFare thee well, Gabrielle.Hear the wedding march playingNow I'm home, I'll be stayingNevermore to be sayingFare thee well, Gabrielle.******************** ***************More lyrics on KarlDan's lyrics website: http://www.fortunecity.com/tin...

I didn't think about this. A good point! :)

It may be that this bit of plagiarism was unofficially condoned to get the work of Ostrovskiy & Oshanin exposed to a wider audience. Be that as it may, Oshanin became a consultant in Western cinema studios before his death in 1997. And Ostrovsky is now a Russian correspondent for several Western news media. So both of them did get this exposure to the Western world. Good show!

If I am correct, what we in the West would call the intellectual property rights to "May There Always Be Sunshine" would have been owned by the Soviet government. So it might well be that they were doing what any good manager will do with his material, try to get it exposed to a wider audience. The Cold War being what it was in 1964, this would have required a bit of subterfuge. That would explain why they never protested this "borrowing".

There is not much argument about the origin. Soviet song is an anti-war political statement. This video's lyrics are a love song. But the tune sounds like a marching song with trumpets. It looks like somebody took Soviet song, created different lyrics and didn't care to change the style. A lazy, unimaginative steal. Bjorn is one of my favorite musicians, I wish he didn't participate in this show. But this has already happened, so be it. :)

Stange. I actually meant EXACTLY what ji61m meant. One way or another, I am sure the plagiarism has been dealt with. So kick back and enjoy the music!

Thank you Jan for your great post of this great song. I'm sorry for my comment to the book writer below, I certainly mean no disrespect towards you or your vids. I just think a person doesn't need to thrust their beliefs on all who come to watch and enjoy.Peace, Jim~
