its the symbolism for the structure of society.How the slave goes off to pay his never ending debt whist the government gaurds our children,feeding them horrid food pushing pills on them molesting them (yes teachers have been having sex with students)even priests and uncles and fathers and people down the street the moral of the story is to keep your eyes on your kids instead of worrying about you once you have kids it isnt about you anymore.educating them with false information.promoting hate.

IMHO...that's how abuse worked (and maybe still does). Both stepdad and Tommy's mom have a gut feeling about Uncle Ernie, but it's such a vile, uncomfortable subject (and who else will watch Tommy whilst the grownups get "me time") that they sweep it under the rug...pretend it's not happening. Stepdad confronts the perv in a passive-aggressive way. So again, they can keep up this facade of normality. Uncle Ernie is free to continue his sleaziness elsewhere.
