June 2005A citizens' patrol group in Arizona is vowing to do what their government won't -- close down the Mexico border. But that's worrying many who see them as racist vigilantes. Every year, over a million illegal immigrants try to cross the US/Mexican border. Hundreds die in the attempt. "People migrate because of sheer economic desperation," explains public defender Isabel Garcia. "It's not something that they take lightly." But the minutemen of Arizona have no sympathy. "We have out of control immigration," states Chris Simcox, co-founder of the group. He organises patrols of volunteers to hunt down migrants. The minutemen have proved so successful, they're planning to expand to other counties. But with the US economy dependent on illegal labour, the government is unlikely to heed their call to stop all immigration.

The fact that there's such a thing as an illegal shows that we do want less immigrants. As long as a person must work all day in a factory to get $2USD, and less than a mile away be able to make >$6USD an hour, there will always be people finding ways in.I agree that people should demand more from their governments, but if you're barely making it you can't stop working and go protest, especially if you have a family.

We dont want fewer immigrants, we want fewer illegals. Im with you on legalizing drugs, but what the illegals should be doing is demand better from the governments of the nations they come from.

this is a good report, attempts to be objective. but don't blame Hispanic deaths on anything but their own illegal activity. the Minutemen are only doing what the govt. doesn't. and also, if the Mexicans didn't come, the U.S. businesses would HAVE to pay higher wages to Americans get the workers they need. stay in Mexico, maybe, and make your country better.

If the US wants less immigrants they need to help mexico and all latin america. The stronger the countries that border us the stronger we will be. A rising tide lifts all ships. Make drugs legal. One of the biggest sources of corruption and power in mexico, which is getting worse, is drugs and the cartels/mafias that profit from them.
