UNICEF: ECHO and UNICEF promote Plumpy'nut production

NIAMEY, Niger, 18 May 2007 -- Two years after Niger's severe nutrition crisis, the sight of undernourished children is less common than it was, but chronic malnutrition still affects more than 50 percent of the country's young children. And 10 per cent of Niger's children suffer from acute malnutrition, even when the harvests are good.Like many therapeutic health centres across Niger, the UNICEF-supported clinic in Tillabery -- an hour away from the capital, Niamey -- gives Plumpy'nut to severely malnourished children. The high-protein, high-energy, peanut-based paste typically comes in foil wrappers or small plastic tubs, which are practical for children who can easily eat them. For more information please visit http://www.unicef.org/nutritio...

I agree. The problem is population control - and STD's. The AIDS epidemic. There are many more root issues that need to be addressed as well

But they still do have people dying because many farmers are only allowed to eat what they grow - which gives them a diet which lacks diversity and many nutrients. For example they were studying rice farmers who were dying from cancer because of a zinc deficiency.

As example if China had no stronge laws for natality control, they would be like many Africa countries today, starving. But China, despite ditactorial politic, was wise and implemented natality control, and today they have no starving populations.

You did a fine commnet and 4 fooold classified you as negative. But you are right, if we think that in tghose countris a 16 years old girls is already a mother, and wil have many babies... There will be a boom of biblions of people in future,a nd there will be no food on earth to so many people, if they don't stop to have so many kids. A similar thing already happen in some places.

I saupose if just eat peanuts it's not the same as eat a paste of if, since would have a higher absorption eating the past. Also this special paste peanut nased food ir enriched with vitamins and minirals. Fine to help people starving. But if a natality contyrol do not happnen, the problem in future can be higher, since there would be many more people to feed and the agriculture in those countries would never handle.

Amazing scientific discovery. However, can we please adopt instead making new ones? Birth control is also an amazing scientific discovery. We're competing for finite resources. Even dumb-level math tells us there ain't enough to go around. Yes, love the already-born baby, but could we please stop making new ones for a minute? Please? At this rate, we'll go the way of the do do, & that's ok, but we're taking down everything else with us. It just doesn't seem logical, sane, smart, or reasonable.

I have to agree. Though it is amazing, the recovery, I am BAFFLED as to why anyone, really, is even making one new kid with the world population at over 6.5 billion. I of course care NOT what one's race is (we are all the same race when it comes to competition for land, water, and air) - we gotta STOP MAKING NEW PEOPLE!Every problem we face can be alleviated were we to have FEWER PEOPLE. Why isn't it front page news, DAILY? NEGATIVE POPULATION GROWTH, PLEASE, regardless of who you are. Thanks.

I want to help by purchasing plumpy nut for these children...can someone tell me how and where to donate?

this actually makes the crisis much worse. We need to reduce the number of humans by giving insentives for people not to have more than 2 children. It is a great thing to help responsible people but pointless to help people who are breeding machines.
