its definatly soul that draws the crowd what do most ppl know about the technicality of jazz unless they play it....play for the majority ,play with feeling...

I had Jerry Weldon on my last CD... one of the few players still blowing with that big soulful sound... When you hear a young Berklee guy you think "Oh, how great he is!" but when you hear a player like Cobb you FEEL it... its really a physically and emotionally overwhelming experience... especially if you're in the room... There are a few players who still have that sound, but sadly few players are under pressure to blow their butts off... hot and bluesy is out... cool and boring is in... :-(

I got in trouble for saying nasty things like that Eddie. Good comment. I was criticizing some of our modern players for "running their fingers". I think a simple melody (like Mary Had A Little Lamb) would suffice. But, played with soul (space, feeling).

You said it man. One wonders whether it is technical perfection that draws crowds, or feeling (soul).I think the latter.

I had the great fortune to see Arnett twice. Years later he is still such a huge influence on my playing. Those wish they were Brecker clone nitwits who haven't listened to this stuff don't know half what they think they do. I play like this and the young guys in the band diss me while the audience keeps thanking me for my playing. This guy was a brilliant technician on the horn with something to say and a great spirit. Arnett is one of the all time GREATS!!

Go Arnett go! He was a master. You can listen to his music every day and discover something new in it. I love the stuff he did with Lockjaw.
