This, as well as Lou Reed's live version are really great. I tend to favor the Cowboy Junkie's version but it depends upon my mood.I'm not one of those people who seem to need to defend the original in some way. To each his or her own.

The Cowboy Junkies version is the version from the 1969 The Velvet Underground Live, with the 3 chord progression, whereas the 1970 version from Loaded - Fully Loaded Edition is a 4-chord progression. Lou Reed has also separately recorded renditions in a different key. It's a cover.
